My marketing clients pay me to advise them when and where to sell their grain. I develop a plan for each farm, tailor-made to the individual needs of their business. We prepare a budget for the upcoming crop year, and then address cash flow needs, storage limitations, and business management preferences. I spend time analyzing markets and tracking local pricing, and then add in the specific needs of each farm to market their grain.

Recently, I was sent a newsletter from a local grain buyer titled Seven Ways to Streamline Your Farm Marketing. The author highlighted several tips to overhaul your thinking when it comes to grain marketing. The goal was to ease the overwhelm that many feel when it comes to marketing their grain. As an Advisor, I agreed with all of the tips.

As a Coach, it struck me how much the list paralleled transition planning work – an area where many feel overwhelmed as well. For each marketing tip that was listed, I came up with a similar piece of advice for transition planning.

The first tip was to “focus on profit, not price.” In other words, price is only one piece of the puzzle when it comes to profit. Your focus should be on the whole picture, on achieving a specific profit margin, not just a specific price. As an Advisor, I think that’s good advice.

As a Coach, I also think it’s good advice. Consider a family farm owner who focuses primarily on getting the business to the next generation but doesn’t give much attention to creating a healthy business culture. While this is a good primary focus, it shouldn’t be the only area that gets attention. A healthy business culture will create next-generation family members who want to be involved instead of getting burned out and leaving. Shifting some focus towards the culture on your farm will pay huge dividends down the road.

The second tip was to “commit to planning.” The author explained how using your historical yields and tracking your costs will help answer key questions regarding profit margin, how much to sell, when to sell, and at what price to sell.

As an Advisor, I like this tip. We all know expecting our plans to be followed exactly is foolish, but that doesn’t mean making plans is. As a Coach I’d say the same thing. Make a plan for the future of your farm business. Where do you want to be in a few years? 10 years? What are your family members planning for their futures? How are you planning to transition ownership of your business to the next generation?

And just like making a marketing plan, succession plans can go out the window at any moment. But that doesn’t matter, because the real value of committing to a plan is that it creates conversation and gets everyone on the same page. So many farm families never talk about their plans, then, when the unexpected happens, chaos ensues and family farms die.

Tip number three was to “establish a reasonable desired profit.” Every farmer would love to sell their canola at $28/bu and walk away with a $650/acre profit. While that price was available just a few years ago, $28/bu for canola is probably once in a lifetime, and it wouldn’t be reasonable to plan a budget with a selling price that high.

The parallel advice for succession planning would be to make a reasonable amount of progress each year. Succession doesn’t have to happen overnight, but it does need to happen. It’s difficult, tedious work that is often complex and awkward, but if you don’t schedule that meeting, nobody will. Issues that could be solved in a few conversations can drag on for years because they get booted to the bottom of the priority list. Set some realistic goals and make forward progress.

The fourth tip on the list was to “sell meaningful amounts.” In other words, you must sell all your inventory to make a profit. That’s a no-brainer, isn’t it? Keeping grain in the bin forever won’t generate any money.

My corresponding advice for this one is to make your business more meaningful. What are your core values, and how can you align your actions with those values? Cultivate deep and authentic relationships and find purpose in something larger than yourself. Practice living in the moment while acknowledging and appreciating the good things in your life.

Number five on the list was to “expose yourself to the market.” The author explains how there are resources and tools available that can help you reach your profit margin goals. Resources like hedging, target contracts, and futures-only or basis-only contracts. Another resource would be a Grain Marketing Advisor like myself, wink wink.

You also need to “expose yourself to the market” when working through a succession plan. Accountants, lawyers, investment/financial advisors, and communication/conflict coaches are commonly part of the team of professionals that assist farm families. You are not alone – ask for help when you need it.

The sixth tip on the list was to “understand crop insurance.” Farming is a risky venture, and knowing how crop insurance works can reduce your risk and protect your revenue. Most of you use crop insurance – you don’t have to farm for long before counting on it to cover poor weather.

Insurance is also important for your succession plan. Sometimes that can look like a life insurance tool that is used to transfer equity to a non-farming sibling. Sometimes insurance can be in the form of inter-spousal agreements or unanimous shareholder agreements that work to protect the longevity of your farm business. Another form of insurance is to write down all your verbal agreements and have them notarized by a lawyer.

The final advice given on the list was to “avoid the hecklers.” The author describes how listening to myths or fables about marketing can distract you from the plan you made earlier. As an advisor, I hear the coffee shop fables where a producer brags about how much they sold their wheat for. While there may be some truth to these stories, they don’t tell the whole story and often omit the ugly truths.

Myths surround succession planning work as well. For example, “There is a right way and a wrong way to do it” or “Other people have it all figured out,” or “It’s too hard and can’t be done.” Myths like this can keep you from moving forward with your own succession. It’s important to ignore these false messages and focus on your own situation. Avoid the naysayers, listen to your mentors.

A good marketing plan is not unlike a healthy succession process. There are ways to streamline both of them to lessen the overwhelm you may feel about them. Remember, you are not alone in this work.

Did you enjoy 7 Ways to Streamline Your Farm Transition Process? You might want to check these articles out, too:

How To Save On Your Next Accounting Bill
How to Say “Sorry” at Harvest
Prepare Your Family for the Storm: Strengthening Resilience in Peaceful Times

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”Section” _builder_version=”4.24.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row admin_label=”Row” _builder_version=”4.24.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.17.6″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://elainefroese.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Ultimate-Decision-Maker-1.jpg” title_text=”Ultimate Decision Maker (1)” url=”https://elainefroese.com/insights/free-stuff/ultimate-decision-maker/” url_new_window=”on” admin_label=”Image” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

As a Grain Marketing Advisor and Farm Family Coach, I’ve realized that the same strategies used to streamline grain marketing—like focusing on profit, committing to planning, and avoiding hecklers—can also transform your farm transition planning. Where is it written you cannot leave the farm during harvest? (Almost on every page of the unpublished book “The Culture of Agriculture.”)

If you are one of the 2800 folks who have stumbled upon “Finding Fairness in Farm Transition” on my YouTube channel at Farm Family Coach, you already know I am on a mission to change mindsets in agriculture. Fairness is helping everyone in the family be successful.

Enter Scott Armstrong and his new workbook: Mind Switch Retirement Planner.

Armstrong is a speaker friend who shared his insights at a national financial planner September convention in Niagara Falls, the place I also journeyed to at the start of our September harvest. He uses the word “retirement”, for ag folks I prefer to use the term reinvention:

Here are some things to consider as you age on your farm or ranch:

What are the current roles you want to continue? Which ones would you like to let go of? My farmer is coughing more after cleaning bins, and I am encouraging him to quit that task at age 65, which is now.

Are you still passionate about farming? Or just parts of it? Simon Sinek says, “fulfillment comes when we live our lives on purpose”. What is it you are doing on your farm where you lose all track of time? This summer I think my farmer lost track of mowing fields and ditches and waiting for the grain to ripen. I love to play with my grandkids and enjoy their giggles, stories, and curiosity. Play me with them is a sweet spot and I am intentional in making time for them. I am still passionate about helping farm families make intentional choices for a better quality of life and harmony through understanding.

Do your passion and purpose align with your spouse’s vision? This is where it gets messy. You want to leave the farm life roles and responsibilities, but your partner does not. Not for a long time! Where is it written you cannot pursue some things in different time zones or days apart from your spouse? Independence is one of my core values, yet my husband respects what I need to fill my well, and I am happy when I return to the farm from my off-farm contracts and contacts. Love and respect for the other can go both ways.

Adventure is big on Scott Armstrong’s workbook list. Farmers spend a lot of money on crop protection and other inputs. Many use the points from farm credit cards to fund short-term winter adventures. One of my clients is on a motorbike in the Maritimes as I write this. (Dairy farmer). Another farmer spends time in Mexico helping the poor build houses in the winter, and he wants to do more of this. Our adventures to visit friends in New Zealand, or travel with friends to Hawaii have been great times of renewal. Perhaps there is an ag tour you have been putting off. The GREAT PAUSE showed us how isolation and lack of adventure can really cramp our style, but we now have options. The most recent adventure for folks in our circle has been electric bikes. They are great for checking fields, riding down the Turtle Mountains to Boissevain, and going for a quick spin before supper. What is the adventure you have been putting off?

Vitality is an energy we all want more of. Armstrong is convinced we are only using 50% of our body’s capacity. Our wonderful physician Dr. Nell shook his finger at us 5 years ago saying “Look you two it’s time you started having some fun. At 75 it all starts to fall apart!” This year I’ve shed some weight via the app “NOOM” and am working on a better morning fitness routine. My friend, a cattle producer at age 68 does lots of stretching and 40 minutes on her elliptical every morning. She makes time for lots of hiking adventures and ensures her body is in great form. Armstrong has a great list of sleep hacks to have more renewal time.
Your body is not a machine. Save money now by paying better attention to your health and making small habit changes to be healthier. Be kind to your brain and get off your devices long before bed. This will not kill you, and your marriage may be better off for the pillow talk without blue lights flashing from your cell phone or iPad, or TV.

Finances: The number one encouragement I have is to find a good financial planner who can guide you with your income streams and personal wealth as your farm assets keep growing. CAFA which is the Canadian Association of Farm Advisors has great advisors in their directory who understand the culture of agriculture and the challenges of debt servicing and the need for personal wealth options. See www.cafanet.ca.

Living Legacy: What do you want people to say about you BEFORE you die?
I hope you have a wonderful 80th birthday party where folks can tell you in their own words and stories about how your life really was a blessing to them. Do you want to be able to set your grandkids up for financial success? Can you help fund their RESP for trades or university training? Could you help fund the local arts and culture or sports foundation of your small town? Would you be able to secretly give a “leg up” to a struggling single parent? Having the time to walk alongside newcomers to your community and financial support can be a huge blessing to making your town a great place to age gracefully. We live close to one of Manitoba’s most beautiful small towns. The new bakeshop owner is now making sourdough bread with wheat head designs, plus great peanut butter marshmallow slices. This news may not excite you, but it is becoming a destination attraction. Sometimes it is the ‘little things in life” that make a day sweeter.

Social times. Armstrong surprised me with his challenge to question who your friends are and why. Post-Covid relationships look different, and you may be navigating the loss of long-time or childhood friends. Intentionally make a list of the folks who align with your purpose and plans for growth. I’ll still a big fan of calling my far-away friends to keep relationships growing, yet I also know having tea in person is refreshing. I suspect the guys reading this are longing for more friendships beyond the farm gate.
