Would you be courageous enough to look at your own issues, strengths, and weaknesses? I bet you would if it were easy.<\/p>\n<p>People&#8217;s problems on farms are nothing new. The fact is, many farm families are avoiding very basic things that could make a huge difference to decrease their stress levels and increase energy for getting things done.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s encouraging the heart of your business, your people, especially farm fathers who are often overlooked when we think of people who may need encouragement.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a list of practical encouragements based on the work of Gary Smalley and John Trent, who wrote <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gift of the Blessing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I\u2019ve also added some practical tools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ways to Encourage Your Farming Father<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. <\/span><b>Praise and acknowledgment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As founders age, they wonder what their new roles will be when their names are off the land titles, or they aren\u2019t the main manager anymore. Forty years of farming earns respect in my books. Can you acknowledge your dad\u2019s wisdom and praise him for his hard work? Uncertainty of the future drives more anxiety. Gratitude is a good antidote.\u00a0 Are you thankful for the \u201cleg up\u201d he has given your operation? Ask him what he thinks and honour his opinion.\u00a0 All ages need affirmation. \u201cI appreciate your input Dad, and I respect your years of experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><b>. Drain away unresolved anger<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You change air and fuel filters for better performance. How about getting rid of your anger filters and work towards conflict resolution? Being angry sucks energy out of your being and decreases your efficiency as a farmer. What would you regret if you found Dad dead beside the baler? Father\u2019s Day is a great deadline for forgiveness and extending the olive branch to seek true peace in your family relationships. Smalley says that unresolved anger \u201ccloses a person\u2019s spirit. Prolonged anger can lead to depression, ulcers, or high blood pressure. These are just a few of the emotional and physical problems that can accompany anger!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smalley suggests:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-Become tenderhearted with your words, soften your tone.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-Increase understanding by listening well and asking about the hurt.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-Recognize the offense by admitting that you were wrong.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-Attempt to touch, even just a squeeze on the shoulder.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-Seek forgiveness from the one you have offended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>3.<b> Give the inheritance of a good name<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. What is your reputation worth?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are your actions adding value to the emotional bank account of your farm family?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you proud of your behaviour and happy with your reputation? Being known as a \u201ccranky old coot\u201d is not my idea of success or legacy. I often tell families that you \u201cget the behaviour that you accept.\u201d If you are doing something to harm the good name of your family\u2026what is that really about? Are you going to hold the offenders\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accountable for their actions, or just let the nasty actions slide? Many farmers are avoiding confronting the tough issues that are destroying their family\u2019s reputation. The neighbours are not fooled. Bad seed doesn\u2019t produce a bountiful crop. What weeds are choking your good name? Deal with it!\u00a0 I agree with Smalley when he says, \u201cour name is something that, no matter what, we will pass down to our kids, and it can either be a blessing or a curse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. <\/span><b>Take good care of your health<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 I received a lengthy letter from a young farmer with high blood pressure. He\u2019s stressed by a farming brother who expects to be given a lot of assets, without doing the accompanying work. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, \u201cYour health is your wealth.\u201d\u00a0 Encourage your farm father and siblings to seek medical check-ups to ensure they are on a good health track. Stop avoiding the prostate tests, chest x-rays, or heart tests. Your family doesn\u2019t want you to be a martyr, they want a happy, healthy team player who lives a long, high-quality life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. <\/span><b>Teach financial responsibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Farmers have the hard work ethic down pat. Unfortunately, it can get out of whack and become workaholism, or avoidance of building relationships. Are you rich in relationships? Have you taught your adult children to work hard, live well within their means, and see money as a resource to be managed, not a god? Whatever your money values, and whatever money means to you, it is driving your business decisions. Some farmers can\u2019t wait to share their net worth with me, but they are less comfortable sharing the names of their best friends. They usually don\u2019t have many in their emotional support group, as they have been highly focused on providing for their families and creating wealth. Teaching financial responsibility also means that folks earn their net worth and aren\u2019t just given everything, or have a keen sense of entitlement. With land values adding more zeros to the balance sheet, I see more greed in conversations. Have you thanked your dad and mom for their financial support? Are you demanding too much? How much net worth is enough?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. <\/span><b>Let go\u2026avoid over-controlling<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 On coaching calls, I usually have a card that says \u201cpower and control.\u201c This issue is a delicate one for your dad as he is afraid of failure, but doesn\u2019t know how to talk about it. He fears the large debt load you are carrying and how it is going to hinder your future flexibility. He fears that his role is not useful anymore, but if he has some power and control, you will need to listen to him. He also fears that after 40 years of hard work and building up a business, you just might sell the assets and \u201ccash in\u201d in 5 years when the business is in your name. People have control issues for many reasons. Have some courageous conversations to discover why Dad is having a hard time letting go. Assure him of your long-term commitment and dedication to the farm business and family legacy. Smalley says we should bless our children by allowing them to take positive control of their lives as they grow older. If you are over 40, with little control of your farm business, something needs to change soon!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>7.<b> Return words of encouragement to your father<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here\u2019s a poem by Adrian Rodgers:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is for you, Dad, for the father I love,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the one who has cared all these years,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but has never heard enough about how much I care.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So this is for you,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the one who has helped me through<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all my childhood fears and failures,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and turned all that he could,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">into successes and dreams.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the man who is a wonderful example<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of what more men should be.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the person whose devotion to his family\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is marked by gentle strength and guidance.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And whose love of life, sense of direction,\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and down-to-earth wisdom,\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">makes more sense to me now<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">than nearly any other thing I learned.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you never knew how much I respected you,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I want you to know it now, Dad,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and if you never knew how much I admire you,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">let me say that I think you are the best father<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that any child ever had .<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a note filled with love,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and it\u2019s all for you\u2026Dad.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Say the words. Write the note. Embrace and encourage your farming father. He uses the word \u201cretirement\u201d, for ag folks I prefer to use the term reinvention:<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Here are some things to consider as you age on your farm or ranch:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"ol1\">\r\n \t<li class=\"li1\"><b>What are the current roles you want to continue?<\/b> Which ones would you like to let go of? My farmer is coughing more after cleaning bins, and I am encouraging him to quit that task at age 65, which is now.<\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"li1\"><b>Are you still passionate about farming?<\/b> Or just parts of it? Simon Sinek says, \u201cfulfillment comes when we live our lives on purpose\u201d. What is it you are doing on your farm where you lose all track of time? This summer I think my farmer lost track of mowing fields and ditches and waiting for the grain to ripen. I love to play with my grandkids and enjoy their giggles, stories, and curiosity. Play me with them is a sweet spot and I am intentional in making time for them. I am still passionate about helping farm families make intentional choices for a better quality of life and harmony through understanding.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"li1\"><b>Do your passion and purpose align with your spouse\u2019s vision<\/b>? This is where it gets messy. You want to leave the farm life roles and responsibilities, but your partner does not. Not for a long time! Where is it written you cannot pursue some things in different time zones or days apart from your spouse?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Independence is one of my core values, yet my husband respects what I need to fill my well, and I am happy when I return to the farm from my off-farm contracts and contacts. Love and respect for the other can go both ways.<\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"li1\"><b>Adventure is big<\/b> on Scott Armstrong\u2019s workbook list. Farmers spend a lot of money on crop protection and other inputs. Many use the points from farm credit cards to fund short-term winter adventures. One of my clients is on a motorbike in the Maritimes as I write this. (Dairy farmer). Another farmer spends time in Mexico helping the poor build houses in the winter, and he wants to do more of this. Our adventures to visit friends in New Zealand, or travel with friends to Hawaii have been great times of renewal. Perhaps there is an ag tour you have been putting off. The GREAT PAUSE showed us how isolation and lack of adventure can really cramp our style, but we now have options. The most recent adventure for folks in our circle has been electric bikes. They are great for checking fields, riding down the Turtle Mountains to Boissevain, and going for a quick spin before supper. What is the adventure you have been putting off?<\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"li1\"><b>Vitality is an energy we all want more of.<\/b> Armstrong is convinced we are only using 50% of our body\u2019s capacity. Our wonderful physician Dr. Nell shook his finger at us 5 years ago saying \u201cLook you two it\u2019s time you started having some fun. At 75 it all starts to fall apart!\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This year I\u2019ve shed some weight via the app \u201cNOOM\u201d and am working on a better morning fitness routine. My friend, a cattle producer at age 68 does lots of stretching and 40 minutes on her elliptical every morning. She makes time for lots of hiking adventures and ensures her body is in great form. Armstrong has a great list of sleep hacks to have more renewal time.\r\nYour body is not a machine. Save money now by paying better attention to your health and making small habit changes to be healthier. Be kind to your brain and get off your devices long before bed. This will not kill you, and your marriage may be better off for the pillow talk without blue lights flashing from your cell phone or iPad, or TV.<\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"li1\"><b>Finances:<\/b> The number one encouragement I have is to find a good financial planner who can guide you with your income streams and personal wealth as your farm assets keep growing. CAFA which is the Canadian Association of Farm Advisors has great advisors in their directory who understand the culture of agriculture and the challenges of debt servicing and the need for personal wealth options. See <span style=\"color: #44b6ac;\"><a style=\"color: #44b6ac;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cafanet.ca\"><span class=\"s1\">www.cafanet.ca<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Living Legacy:<\/strong> What do you want people to say about you BEFORE you die?\r\nI hope you have a wonderful 80th birthday party where folks can tell you in their own words and stories about how your life really was a blessing to them. Do you want to be able to set your grandkids up for financial success? Can you help fund their RESP for trades or university training? Could you help fund the local arts and culture or sports foundation of your small town? Would you be able to secretly give a \u201cleg up\u201d to a struggling single parent? Having the time to walk alongside newcomers to your community and financial support can be a huge blessing to making your town a great place to age gracefully. We live close to one of Manitoba\u2019s most beautiful small towns. The new bakeshop owner is now making sourdough bread with wheat head designs, plus great peanut butter marshmallow slices. This news may not excite you, but it is becoming a destination attraction. Sometimes it is the \u2018little things in life\u201d that make a day sweeter.<\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"li1\"><b>Social times<\/b>. Armstrong surprised me with his challenge to question who your friends are and why. Post-Covid relationships look different, and you may be navigating the loss of long-time or childhood friends. Intentionally make a list of the folks who align with your purpose and plans for growth. I\u2019ll still a big fan of calling my far-away friends to keep relationships growing, yet I also know having tea in person is refreshing. I suspect the guys reading this are longing for more friendships beyond the farm gate.
